My name is Daniel. I was an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and am now a writer who has
published three books including South Korea: Our Story by Daniel Nardini.
It is unimaginable in the 21st Century. Nepal, once a Hindu monarchy,
has now become a Communist state. The new Nepali prime minister, Khagda Prasad Oli, now
heads a coalition government primarily composed of a legislature made up mostly of the Communist
Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) and Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center)
legislators. The Communists, who had been gaining complete control over Nepal since they
helped to overthrow its monarchy after a bloody guerrilla war in 2008, have been chnaging
the political landscape by creating a new constitution that will make sure the Communists
remain in power. This in turn is creating sour relations with Nepal's southern neighbor India
which supplies Nepal with much of its oil and imported food and medical products. In
retaliation, India has been cutting its trade with Nepal; causing shortages of basic goods.
What will most likely happen is that Nepal will turn more towards China which will most
likely give Nepal everything it needs. This will in turn make Nepal even more pro-China and
will be bad news for Nepal's Tibetan refugee population. Indeed, as has been the case in
all Communist states, certain minorities are among the first to be targeted as "enemies of
the state." This is already happening to the Nepali Christians who make up 1.5 percent of
the population. I can only see darkness descending on the nation of Nepal.
